“The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber”

By Earnest Hemmingway

Anna Cho

3/2/06

Period 2

1.      Margot Macomber is beautiful.  She is also bossy and does not care too much about her husband.  She gets mad easily at her husband.  She cheats on her husband for Wilson.  It seems like Margot is a native African.

2.      Wilson is a hunter that is white and he is described as having a red face.  Middle height with sandy hair, a stubby mustache, a very red face and extremely cold blue eyes with faint white wrinkles at the corners that grooved merrily when he smiled is how he is physically described.  He is American.

3.      In the beginning of the story, Macomber is interested in hunting, but not as much as Wilson.  Wilson describes him as a “bloody coward”.  He changes at the end of the novel by hunting a buffalo and his pride takes him further by hunting some more.

4.      The relationship between Margot and Francis is okay because they have been married for about eleven years already.  However, through the course of the story, their relationship starts to break.  Margot cheats on Francis and has an affair with Wilson.  In the end, Margot kills Francis.  Margot slowly ignores Francis.  However, they cannot divorce because Francis is too rich and Margot is beautiful.

5.      Margot meets Wilson in the beginning.  She is impressed by this man and seems to be interested in him.  Later she has an affair with him and he allows this to happen.  They go hunting together and spend much more time together.

6.      Macomber and Wilson meet and they talk about mostly hunting.  They come from two different backgrounds so they have different thoughts, but some of their thoughts on hunting are similar.  Macomber is not the best hunter; he is a beginner. Wilson loves hunting because he is a professional.  Macomber starts to hate Wilson because he is participating in an affair with his wife.

7.      The psychological games that are captured or reflected in the story are when Margot cheats on Francis and decides to go with Wilson.  Margot has little and no concern for Francis, but most attention on Wilson.  Francis pretty much knows what’s going on and he is probably angry at Wilson.

8.  Hemmingway’s attitude towards women is sort of a stereotype because he thinks that women only look at men and their money.  However a good trait that he gives the women in this short story is that they are beautiful.  This type of situation that the women are in is peculiar.  His view towards men is kind of two-way and diverse.  He describes that one enjoys hunting and is a professional and the other he describes as a rich man.  Also, he makes the woman kill her husband.  He might have something against wives.  After all, he did get married four times.

9.  Margot is described as “white faced” (147), “worried” (151), and “very afraid of something” (151) towards the end of the story because she is scared of the “new” Francis Macomber.  Macomber is rich, but he is referred to as a coward many times in the short story.  The sudden change of bravery and desire in hunting might have scared Margot.

10.  In the end of the story, Margot kills Francis when she “tries” to shoot the buffalo.  I was surprised, but also I knew that something was going to happen between those two.  Wilson seemed to know what was going on while she was crying.  He says that he was going to leave her anyways and he adds more uncomfortable subjects such as bringing in pictures and having witnesses of the killing.
